Mass Event Cancellation Extended Due to COVID-19

Throughout the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The City of Calgary has aligned its actions to the provincial government’s guidance for both event cancellations and relaunch. As such, City-led events as well as permits for third-party events held on City land were cancelled until August 31.

The City is now extending the cancellation of event requests received prior to June 12 that cannot meet current provincial guidelines. If you submitted a request prior to June 12 and you can meet the new provincial guidelines for your event, please submit a new event request so the we can vet your application through our interdepartmental events team.

We are also accepting new permit applications for community events, non-competitive walks and runs and drive-in and drive-thru events that meet provincial and City requirements, legislation and restrictions on gatherings.

The City’s goal is to ensure the safety of attendees while also balancing the need to continue to support a healthy economy through the festival and event industry. To this end, we continue to align our actions with the Alberta Relaunch Strategy, which lifts restrictions in stages as the criteria for measuring COVID-19 containment are achieved

To help us make sound decisions, Arts and Culture regularly conducts environmental scans and engages with stakeholders and partners to understand public perceptions regarding attending events and impacts surrounding health and safety directives under COVID-19. Recent conversations with the local event industry, Civic Partners and national colleagues reveal a strong desire for festivals and events to resume. The City also has a strong desire to support events as we recognize the importance of this industry to our local economy. We’ll continue to update you as restrictions lift and the festivals and events industry is able to progress through staged recovery.
